Cowboy Dinner

It was a cowboy dinner tonight
Opened up a can of beans
Ate them cold with crackers
And washed it down with a beer
It was a cowboy dinner tonight.
~
The sun had set
Work demanded the hand
All the daylong
Quitting in time to feed every one
It was a cowboy dinner tonight.
~
The livestock fed
Horses happy
The dogs a begging
In spite of having been fed
It was a cowboy dinner to night
~
Just a cold can of beans
Decided upon
Just didn’t feel like cooking
Thank God for caned beans
For a cowboy dinner.
~
Sat back and listened to the rain
And slowly ate the beans
Dreaming of times gone by
And of times yet to come
To a company a cowboy dinner
~
Alone but not alone
The rain falling without wind
Bringing God’s blessing
He drank another beer
As he finished his cowboy dinner
